A long time before the first houses where build in Lelystad, they made a work island in the middle of the former Zuider Zee. This work-island was the base for the dike-workers who build the dikes around the East of Flevoland. In 1951 people started living on the work-island en they lived in wooden barracks. Later on the workers, clerks of the work, technical officials came to live in houses made of stone, until 1967 where these the only houses of entire Lelystad. Until 1955 you could only reach Lelystad by water, later on by way of the dike.
Present day the former work island is a part of the neighborhood Lelystad-Haven. The very first wooden houses and barracks are still there and are nominated to become an official monument...
